Go in with a good attitude to learn and be ready to apply the skills that you learn to real-life situations

Despite having a degree, and previous work experience in marketing, Ekow struggled to find a job in his desired field of sports marketing. He knew he needed to get extra skills in digital marketing and data analysis, and he looked for ways to bridge this gap. He soon discovered Click Start by Be the Business in Digital Skills in Business, at the University of East London. The programme promised to provide the necessary skills and practical experience needed to move into a marketing career. After completing Click Start, Ekow successfully landed a role as a marketing intern at a sports marketing agency.

“It was challenging after university to actually get a job. I was struggling with this idea because you have a degree and you expect brighter prospects, but it actually takes a long while to find a job. You know, I was hit with a reality check.”

Ekow applied for Click Start, viewing the programme as a way to enhance practical skills and network with industry professionals. It was also an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. Ekow found the experience enriching, providing valuable certifications and practical insights into digital marketing.

“The digital marketing part was great, and being able to apply these real-life concepts in our own business ideas was a good part of the course.”

Ekow emphasised the importance of applying the skills in real-life contexts. He also appreciated the programme’s focus on collaboration and critical thinking, which prepared him well for the demands of the workplace.

Upon completing the Click Start programme, Ekow successfully secured a marketing internship in the sports industry, hoping to translate this into a full-time position at the end of his internship. Reflecting on the importance of real-world experience alongside formal education, Ekow said:

“I truly feel like a degree is not enough nowadays…being equipped and armed with experiences is equally important. I think something that I wish I’d invested in more in my university times was getting extra experience and opportunities.”

This perspective highlights the critical role of programmes like Click Start in preparing people for the complexities of today’s job market. Ekow recommends Click Start to others seeking rapid upskilling and practical experience, offering this advice:

“Go in with a good attitude to learn and be ready to apply the skills that you learn to real-life situations.”

Overall, Ekow’s journey with Click Start illustrates the programme’s effectiveness in equipping participants with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in competitive professional environments and get on the path to achieving their career goals.
