Cheyenne Sloane: The Desired Candidate
There was never a dull moment when we were learning anything.
Although passionate about marketing, Cheyenne found it challenging to gain practical experience in the field. The desire for hands-on experience, coupled with the opportunity to work with small businesses, led Cheyenne to apply for Click Start by Be the Business in Digital Skills in Business, supported by the University of East London (UEL). This was inspired by a friend who had previously completed the programme.
“For me, it was more about working with the businesses at first because I heard about Click Start through a friend of mine who’s done the course and I thought working with small businesses was the best opportunity to get more hands-on experience.”
The Click Start experience surpassed Cheyenne’s expectations. The comprehensive curriculum and engaging learning environment, characterised by passionate and energetic teachers, provided invaluable knowledge and skills. The programme’s structure, which included group projects presentations and employability coaching provided by The Forward Trust, was particularly effective in preparing Cheyenne for the professional world.
“It was so fun. I loved everyone on the course. I loved the teachers. They were so excited to just share everything with us. There was never a dull moment when we were learning anything. It was always really interesting what they set up for us and the different tasks that we had to do.”
As part of programme, learners had to update their LinkedIn profile. Upon doing this, Cheyenne caught the attention of a recruiter from EF (Education First). This led to full-time, fixed term role as a Home Stay Coordinator, managing interactions between students and host families. The skills and confidence gained from Click Start proved instrumental in this transition, highlighting the programme’s effectiveness in bridging the gap between education and employment.
“I think for me personally, I mainly went on the programme to raise my confidence in marketing and working with businesses. I think that’s definitely improved a lot since I’d ended Click Start. They emphasised how important networking is. Click Start definitely helped me boost my confidence.”
Looking ahead, Cheyenne has already secured her next opportunity. Once her current role finishes in August 2024, the small businesses she collaborated with during the Click Start programme are eager to bring Cheyenne on board as a freelancer whilst she finishes her degree. This ongoing professional relationship highlights the lasting impact of Click Start on Cheyenne’s career trajectory.
“After Click Start, the original plan was to work with the small businesses that I worked with on Click Start. Luckily enough, they’re willing to wait for me to finish my job with EF in August. So that’s very exciting.”
For future Click Start learners, Cheyenne emphasises the importance of engaging fully with the programme and maintaining a motivated attitude. She believes that the more effort participants put into the course, the more they will benefit from it, both in terms of knowledge and opportunities.
In summary, Cheyenne’s journey with Click Start demonstrates how targeted training programmes can significantly enhance career prospects. By offering practical experience, personal mentorship, and a supportive learning environment, Click Start equips participants with the tools needed to succeed in their chosen fields. Cheyenne’s success story is proof of the programme’s value and its potential to transform the careers of aspiring professionals.
