Skills Bootcamp overview

Have you got an interest in sustainable buildings? Do you want to learn more about sustainability and net-zero carbon to get a job within the construction and engineering industries? Do you fancy the idea of learning the technical aspects of how buildings work and are measured? Do you want to have the necessary energy literacy to help reduce the embodied and operational carbon of existing and future buildings? Are you at cross-roads and exploring other fields in which to develop an expertise? – If so this bootcamp is the best place to start your journey.

Who is this course for

This bootcamp does not assume that participants will have any prior knowledge of the technical aspects of buildings. However, it assumes that you understand the construction and engineering sectors and that you want to become literate in how to achieve zero carbon buildings. The topics covered in the bootcamp will be developed as an interactive learning workbook that will embed key pre-recorded materials, learning objectives and tasks to be completed by the learner. Then there will be a number of seminars face-to-face that will consolidate the learning. Some of the tasks that the participants will need to complete will include reading, research or prepare material for discussion as well as up-skilling of critical environmental software.

• An undergraduate degree in a Built Environment or engineering profession (e.g. architecture, construction project management, QS, real estate, planning, property development and planning, architecture technology, interior architecture, etc.).
• We will also consider learners already in a built environment employment, that do not hold an undergraduate degree, that need to re-skill / up-skill to deliver the government zero-carbon agenda.

What will I learn

The bootcamp will cover four major topics: introduction to the climate change challenge to enable the delivery of zero carbon buildings; zero-carbon building design and delivery models; retrofitting for zero carbon buildings and new technologies for zero carbon. Also offered to participants will be study skills tutoring and an employability industry mentoring workshop to help with the process of applying for jobs. Then, the final assessment of the skills learnt will take place in the form of a group professional presentation on how to achieve zero carbon buildings. This presentation will be assessed our staff but will also involve critical industry partners. Then, each participant will be asked to prepare a professional reflection on their learning and how they will apply in their current/future careers.
