Big Data and ‘R’: opportunities and challenges for social science research

Data science is an interdisciplinary field aiming at extracting knowledge and insights from data by means of advanced statistics, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and their related methods. Due to the technological advances, data is becoming more available and goes beyond volume, variety, and velocity alone. In addition, every sector is now becoming more data-driven and automated. Therefore, data science is now more important to deal with complex data-driven business, and data scientists are in high demand.

The session focuses on practical, teaching based content to help learners to develop their data science skills. It will demystify big data and explore how it is impacting social science research and business. Attendees can improve their visualization of social data, learn more about quantitative text analysis and the role it plays when working with big data, and master next programming language.

This 90 minute session will be split into 3 parts:

1. Big data: What are the opportunities and challenges for social science research?

2. Why use R? Video demo with Dr Maja Založnik

3. Try out SAGE Campus’ ‘Intro to R’ course

This session will be hosted by SAGE Ocean and is organized by the Institute of Coding at Northumbria University. SAGE Ocean offers a wide range of resources, courses and events as part of their mission to help equip social scientists with the computational skills and tools they need to supercharge their research impact.
