Course overview

On our Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) degree, you’ll create ground-breaking intelligent software to solve complex real-world problems, as you discover how to make computers learn. Exploring topics including mathematics, programming, data analytics and robotics, you’ll develop expertise in a highly technical, dynamic and growing sector with the potential to revolutionise the way we live. You’ll gain a detailed understanding of data flows within organisations and systems and how data can be engineered to produce knowledge, learning from experienced professionals active in the AI research community.

Working in our state-of-the-art AI computer labs, you’ll use the latest software such as Python, R, C#, C++, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, pandas, Unity, Visual Studio and Jupyter notebooks, on a course supported by the UK’s Institute of Coding. Placement opportunities enable you to work with practitioners in real-world settings, gaining skills, experience and contacts invaluable for your future career. Trips to industry conferences and exhibitions offer further networking opportunities along with the chance to demonstrate your skills (additional costs may apply, see course web page for details). We also host our own events such as the COMX end of year show, where you’ll be able to showcase your work to potential employers looking for the next generation of leaders in this exciting and fast-changing field.

Who is this course for

This course is for people who want to explore this exciting and dynamic area of computer science, learning the skills of programming and mathematics necessary for a deep understanding of how artificial intelligence technologies can be successfully applied to real-world problems. There will be opportunities to learn to create intelligence agents, gain a deep understanding of data flows within organisations and systems and how data can be engineered to produce knowledge.

There is the option to undertake a years paid placement as a part of this degree programme and various trips to relevant conferences and events will take place within the academic year.

What will I learn

This course will cover programming in C++ and Python from the ground up, and introduce various libraries and tools for deep learning and data science. We will do both an initial overview of the field of artificial intelligence, and a later deep dive into how the mathematics drives the technology within this field. We will cover optimisation and machine learning algorithms in depth, including both traditional and cutting edge algorithms and how these can be applied to real world problems. On the final year the course content is largely self-driven, with both a practical research project, and a group project, along with a number of optional modules to deep dive into specific areas (e.g. robotics, internet of things, data science).
